Children are fascinated by everything that creeps and flies, and they are convinced that we have to save the world. Adults often lack awareness of this. This is exactly why environmental education is so important.
Let a bug crawl over your hand. Follow an ant road to the anthill. Roll around in the meadow. Trudge through the stream and marvel at dragonflies. For many children, these are the ingredients for a perfect day. “Children have an original need to be in nature,” says environmental psychologist Renate Cervinka.123 essay Promoting this closeness to nature can shape behavior for many years: “I do not destroy what I love. But this love for nature has to be built up, for that contact with nature is necessary. ”For many city children, however, this is difficult, especially when their parents have completely different interests. But even if parents and teachers show their children environmental awareness and teach them about specific behaviors, interest declines during puberty, says Cervinka. “From around ten years on, other issues are important to children, such as changes in their own body or orientation towards friends.” Nevertheless, the attitude of the parents continues to have an effect on the children: “They no longer subscribe to the values of their parents, but they do Behaviors are established. ”It is difficult to keep children in environmental and climate protection, whose parents do not care about these issues.
When the nightingale calls
The Lobau National Park Camp is a children’s paradise. However, it used to be easier to reach families. “In the 90s and 2000s we were dealing with a generation of children in which the environmental movement still had an impact,” says Hofer. Today, parents and children often feel omniscient, but are not. “People today have a confetti knowledge, we lose the generalistic connection, the ability to differentiate between factual knowledge and opinion. There is a trend towards simplification, but many questions do not have easy answers. However, the children have learned to doubt and not be open. ”There is also often a lack of appreciation for learning opportunities such as those offered by the environmental camp.
But once the children are there, they can also be reached. “Children from the city are really flashed when they see a beetle or an ant road. They often lack experience,” says educator Gabriele Töscher-Urban, who leads the children through the forest. “When they see that they are doing something themselves they are also more interested in nature. And if only one or two children tell me at the end that they want to come back with their parents on the weekend, then we’ve already achieved a lot. “With some children, the impression is even more lasting:” We even have applications from young people, who were with us once as children. “
